Jalal Uddin was murdered on 18 February 2016. Subsequent criminal trials heard that Mr Uddin was killed because he practised faith healing named taweez, perceived by some extremists as "black magic."
In November 2022, His Honour Judge Teague KC, Chief Coroner of England and Wales, made a request to the Home Secretary that the circumstances in which Mr Uddin died be examined in a statutory inquiry, to allow all relevant evidence to be heard. That request was approved in November 2023, with terms of reference set as outlined here:
